Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesday highlighter

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be ReadingIt’s simple: turn to a random page of a book you’re currently reading and post two(ish) ‘teaser’ sentences.

“Like ‘kit’, ‘gear’ has come to refer principally to clothing. It has in the past followed the word ‘stuff’ in referring to confused, formless or worthless nonsense. It has also on occasion been used to mean pus or other foul matter, and (like ‘kit’, too actually) the genitals (but then there seems to be very few words that don’t end up referring to the genitals).”
– Introduction of Paraphernalia: The Curious Lives of Magical Things by Steven Connor

I’m reading this book as part of the Bout of Books read-a-thon. I’ll be posting mini-reviews at the end of the week.

What are your teasers this week?

    • It’s a non-fiction book, written by an English professor. He talks about everyday items (bags, rubberbands, keys) and unravels what makes them ‘magical’. It’s like a super in-depth analysis of an object. He talks about emotional connections we have with objects (eg. why it’s so hard to throw out a useless battery) as well as the words behind them and where they came from. But it’s not as boring as I made it sound. It’s very entertaining and interesting. Check out the goodreads page (click on the book title in my post) to read the synopsis.
